The homeowner preparation platform for Australians planning to build or renovate. It is built around the commitment points of a project, so you can prepare for each one before it arrives.

The practice

Architecture and interiors

A Sydney architecture and interior design practice built on co-authorship. The work begins with understanding each client's values, needs and lifestyle, so that the home we design truly belongs to them. I lead the architecture as Director of Architecture, alongside Meike Abbink as Director of Interior Design.

Project delivery

A practice I lead in project management and contract administration, overseeing a project from the signed building contract through to completion.

A note from Ed

Over the past decade I have watched capable people make the biggest financial decisions of their lives with almost no preparation.

The problem was not a lack of care or effort. Useful knowledge was spread across meetings, drawings, consultant reports, quotations and long email threads.

My ambition is to make a lasting contribution beyond the individual homes I design. Over the long term, I am working to change how Australians approach building and renovating.

Home Mastery is how I share the knowledge and experience I have gained as an architect with more people than I could ever work with personally. By making complex decisions easier to understand, it helps homeowners take ownership of their projects and create homes that better support their lives.

The Fifth Elevation

A house is drawn in four elevations, one for each side, and a home project is divided in much the same way, with each professional you engage working mostly on one side of it. That division is deliberate: each of them is engaged for the depth they bring to their own side.

So where does the whole project come into view? As an architect, I think of the answer as a fifth elevation: the view from above, where every side can be seen at once. From there, the decisions that belong to you can be seen in the order they arrive, and Home Mastery is built to give you that view.

Work with me

Advice on your own project, one to one

If you would like an architect's view of your own project, I offer advisory work one to one, separately from Making Studio. Every project needs something different, so the best start is an email with a short description of where you are and the decision in front of you. We then agree the scope and the fee before any work begins.

Speaking and press

Talks and interviews on preparing for a home project

For bios, photographs and the facts in one place, the press kit has everything an editor or an event organiser needs.

  • The commitment points of a home projectThe few decisions that set a project's course, and why they belong to the homeowner rather than to the professionals they engage.
  • The Fifth ElevationSeeing a home project from above, where every side can be seen at once.
  • The Cost of Unmade DecisionsA decision not made early does not stay unmade. It is made later, under pressure, and often by default rather than by choice.
